Richard "Dick" Lee Stone, 78, of La Plata died Oct. 15, 2007, in La Plata. He was born April 9, 1929, at Habre de Venture in Port Tabacco, home of the Stone family since being built by Thomas Stone, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He graduated from La Plata High School, attended the Univ. of Maryland and graduated from Western Maryland College. He served in the U.S. Air Force in an intelligence unit in Germany at Scheirstein on the Rhine for three years then became a teacher and guidance counselor in the Charles County school system until his retirement in 1995.

He had many interests, including family, Charles County and he especially liked to travel. He coached baseball at La Plata High School and the American Legion team, becoming president of the Charles-St. Mary's Baseball League. He served on the Charles County Republican Central Committee, Board of Election Supervisors and Service Academy Selection Board. Another interest led him to serve on the public library board, becoming president as well as being a board member and president of the Southern Maryland Library Association.

He was a former member of the Vestry of Christ Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Southern Maryland Society, Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco, Historical Society of Charles County and Friends of the Charles County Library.
