Ryan grew up in Southern Maryland and graduated from St. Mary's College of Maryland. She began her career with Charles County Community College in 1971 as the library's reader services coordinator and later became director and then dean of learning resources. Before taking the helm as the third president in 1998, she was executive vice president and dean of college services. She stepped down as president in 2005.
