James Thomas Slater was born in Washington, D.C. in 1877 and spent much of his life in Pomonkey, Charles County, Maryland. In his autobiographical papers, Slater writes, “I have always been interested in the progress of my race, especially the youth. I was anxious for the boys and girls of my race in Charles County to learn typing and short hand.” Slater advocated for these and other issues to the County and State governments, and his efforts resulted in several improvements to public education, public health, and the political system in Charles County, MD.
