Newman, Harry Wright, 1894-

Harry Wright Newman (1894-1983) was a local historian and genealogist who studied several lines of lineage in the Southern Maryland region to gather source material for publications that he authored. His publications include: Charles County Gentry, The Lucketts of Portobacco, The Maryland Dents, The Smoots of Maryland, the Stones of Poynton Manor, Waters-Turner-Wilson-Hatch Families of Maryland, among many other titles.

Mr. Newman was the first of three sons born to Harry Anderson Newman and Annie Lenora Wright Newman. He attended George Washington University (1921), Georgetown University, and King’s College at the University of Cambridge in England (1928). Throughout his career, Mr. Newman worked in education and served in various capacities for the U.S. Government. During the 1950s, Newman retired as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of Commerce, and began to pursue his interest in the genealogy of Maryland families.
