John Digges Mitchell, Sr., a native of La Plata, graduated from La Plata high School in 1942. After serving in the Navy, he began work with Southern Maryland Oil in La Plata. He eventually became a member of the Board of Directors of SMO. Mr. Mitchell retired from SMO in 1961 to start his own company, Mitchell Supply Inc., a building and supply firm later renamed MSI Inc. In 1964, Mr. Mitchell founded JVC Inc., a petroleum equipment company based in Clinton. Both companies are now under the direction of his sons, Van T. Mitchell and John D. Mitchell, Jr. Mr. Mitchell was active in the Economic Development Committee of Charles County and the La Plata Lions Club. He was a past president of the Southern Maryland Society and helped to develop the vocational training program in Charles County. He was also active in the development of the Eastern Building Material Dealers Association, and helped to expand dealer involvement, along with establishing an education foundation for that organization.
