Born October 8, 1919 in Lumber Bridge, North Carolina, Nina Wilkinson was the daughter of the late Nathan Stace Tolar and the late Martha Nina Yates Tolar. A 1936 graduate of Parkton High School in NC, she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Flora McDonald College, Red Springs, NC, in 1940. She began her career as a dietician at Hamlet Hospital in North Carolina, then taught school in Parkton before coming to Maryland to teach home economics and chemistry at the former Hughesville High School. After earning a teaching certificate in elementary education, she taught fourth and fourth/fifth grade combinations at Waldorf School and Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, J. P. Ryon, and Malcolm elementary schools.

She was an active member of the Education Association of Charles County where she had served as treasurer and was a lifetime member of the Maryland State Teachers Association and National Education Association. She was also a member of the Charles County Retired Teachers Association and the Epsilon chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international teachers' sorority. Mrs. Wilkinson was also a former member of the Charles County Historical Society and a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Baden, where she was active in the church's United Methodist Women organization.
